Bilingual grammar school (G9)
Second foreign language from Year 6
Tuition in Years 5 and 6 is based on the teaching plan and the standard required for grammar school. During Years 5 and 6 (which are common to all school types), teaching is differentiated at an early stage, based on pupils’ academic ability and preference, linguistic ability and individual needs for support, particularly in the main subjects.
To boost their general linguistic competence, Year 6 pupils choose either Spanish or French as a second foreign language.
Pupils can transfer to secondary modern schooling after detailed parental counselling at the parents’ request. Pupils attend the secondary modern and grammar school courses together in their class group, but their tuition is differentiated. In all other subjects, the pupils are taught in their class group at grammar school level.
Alongside normal lessons, the timetable also includes subject-based free-choice learning periods (45 minutes). During these sessions a subject teacher is present and pupils do their homework or school tasks independently.
The children have lunch together, and the afternoon activities – extra coaching and clubs from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. – complete the academic school programme.
Requirements for admission to the bilingual grammar school:
- Transfer recommendation certificate from Year 4
- Recommendation from the primary school to attend a grammar school or a secondary modern school
- A personal aptitude interview with the school head
- Good grades are expected, as appropriate for successful bilingual schooling.
